Fairy Tale Charm

I love a good fairy tale! Prince Charming? Yes, please. Talking frogs? Sure, I’ll take it! Fairy godmothers and happily ever after? Forget about it! I’ve rounded up a bunch of awe-inspiring artists who all use a bit of whimsical fairy tale charm!

Pincushion fantasy Tiny World – artist: mck254, $75.00

I don’t know how to sew, and rarely use pins & needles… but I still want this perched on my mantle!
Read more about Mimi aka mck254 in her Etsy Handmade Portrait HERE.

Needle Felted Frog Prince - artist: WhisperingWoods, $45.00

How cute is this frog prince? He has the kindest eyes I’ve ever seen…on a frog…prince.
Angela, aka WhisperingWoods, says: “I stumbled upon needle felting a few years ago and I’m hooked.
I love how versatile it is. It’s like painting and sculpting at the same time.

Bookmobile-Winters/Springs – artist: theshophouse, $84.00

Lisa Occhipinti built Shophouse, which refers to a home-based workshop. She is a painter, book artist, and author who is smitten with collecting and creating, and via Shophouse shares her findings and creations with those, like her, who consume the pure bliss of a beautiful object.

Cinderella A Fairytale Portrait Print – artist: StephanieFizer, $20.00

I can practically hear the clock ticking away in this colorful Cinderella-themed print!
Artist, Stephanie Fizer “is a curious girl and illustrator in lovely but misunderstood West Virginia.”

Happily Ever After Ticket Congrats Card – artist: afavorite, $4.50

This congrats card is adorable! Spot the little fairy-tale phone number in the corner, haha!
a. favorite resides in chicago, Illinois, a graphic designer turned letterpress artist. She has always had a passion for design and typography. This passion has fueled her desire to learn the art of letterpress printing.

Cinderella Carriage Finger-puppet Theater – artist: aneliamr, $150.00

Anelia, aka aneliamr, came up with these handmade puppet theaters when brainstorming during her daughter’s naptime.”Set the stage for endless hours of princess fantasy fairy tales! See magic come to life with this Cinderella’s carriage finger puppet theater inspired by the timeless fairy tale.”

Princess: Vintage Leather Petite Suitcase - artist: judythejazzcat, $50.00

And here is one of my own pieces that inspired this entry, based on “The Princess and the Frog.”

Santa Monica Shenanigans

Dave & I went to 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA today… a very sunny Sunday! I took my camera (w/ canon 50mm f1.4 lens) along for the mini-adventure. So much color & inspirado everywhere:

Santa Monica Shenanigans

1. Z Gallerie had a whole wall of turquoise amazingness. It’s no secret this is my fave shade of blue, and you’ll soon learn that it’s all over my house right now. I will force pictures on you, rest assured. Anyway, they had a $5,000 white leather sectional that I ogled at for a good ten minutes. I just wanted to dive into the buttery-soft leather. Yeah, a little lotta bit outta my budget, but a girl can dream for now.

2. Anthropologie! I will undoubtedly mention this magical store one too many times around these parts, but oh well. Just look at their spring decor! I think the stems were made of long PVC pipes and the jumbo tulips out of tissue paper. Serious fairy-tale happiness going on here.

3 and 4. Yep, that’s the TMZ guy, Harvey Levin. People’s Court set up shop on the corner of 3rd & Santa Monica Blvd. Folks were pre-arranged and kept up to speed about a certain situation, and he stood (at about 5′ 6″) with microphone in hand, all official-like, pretending to care about people’s staged opinions. I just wanted to cross the street (Paper Source awaits!!), but since I was being herded along with the rest of the on-lookers, I decided to take a couple snaps. Oh, L.A., you’ve reeled me in again.

5. I know technology is AWESOME, but after walking through our local Borders’ fixture liquidation sale… it was really nice to be inside a bookstore with actual books. This is the Art/Design/Photography section at Barnes & Noble.

6. Paper Source!!! Wheeeeee!

7. Oh Lordy-lord. Dinner time. I present to you the “office burger” with shoe-string style fries & garlic aioli sauce at Father’s Office, about a mile away from 3rd Street. The main focus is the bar, so A) you get carded at the door and B) you order your food from the bartender (and don’t even THINK about altering/deleting anything on the menu. They have a strict no effing around with the menu there. No joke.) then you sit and await the yummy goodness that is your dinner.

8. Cupcakes to go! Yummy Cupcakes on Wilshire had a smorgasbord of flavors. We picked up red velvet + cream cheese, choco-mallow, lemon tart, and “The King” – in tribute to Elvis. Peanut Butter cake w/ bits of BACON, banana frosting, and a healthy sprinkle of peanuts & extra BACON. I’ve just realized that BACON should always be in all-capitals. It makes sense, right? BACON.

BACON.

Update: Actually, that last cupcake is my least favorite so far. Dumb bacon.

Choice Upcyclers from Etsy

There’s a whole lotta upcycling (Putting a spin on old vintage items, thus giving them a new life & function) going on at Etsy.com. I really love the idea of repurposing. Finding beauty in the old and forgotten. So I decided to wade through the vast selection of upcycler artisans and list a few of my faves!

Canvas & Leather Tote, upcycled from a vintage seed shopper bag. Etsy shop: selinavaughan. $85.00

Really love the leather & canvas details on the straps & trim. Shop owner Selina has 10 years of experience in bag-making… and it shows in the details & use of color of each piece.

Braided Rugs upcycled from old rope. Etsy Shop: Ruggin2Raggin. $85.00

I think these rugs are stylish & could be the perfect pop of color in an entry way. Shop owner Anita lives & works in Alaska. She’s in the process of liquidating an old cannery on Kodiak island – and these rugs are just a small example of what her imagination brings to Etsy.

Ruffle Tube Dress, upcycled from men's button-up shirt. Etsy Shop: hellogaogao. $60.00

HelloGaoGao shop owner Phoebe is brand new to Etsy (as in she joined 2 days ago!) Her repurposed items include cute little bowtie necklaces. Definitely an upcycler to watch out for! And speaking of bow-tie necklaces…

Bowtie necklace, upcycled from bike tubes! Etsy Shop: koleradesign. $40.00

Scandinavian shop owner Klara is big on biking, and specializes in jewelry and accessories made from old bike tubes.

Stuffed Teddy Bear, upcycled from recycled denim. Etsy Shop: barbarabearo. $70.00

I’m pretty much in love with this little guy! That little pink angora scarf is perfect, and his proportions look so cuddly. Shop owner Lorna has been sewing since she was 5 years old, and enjoys using old denim & corduroy jeans, the more worn the better! “I launder then unpick them, I save everything – pockets, loops and waistbands, all to be used for different projects.”

Glass Pendant Necklace, upcycled from an old cabinet/drawer pull. Etsy Shop: shopmichl. $23.00

This pendant was “salvaged from a Spanish-style Los Angeles building built in 1928.” Los Angeles shop owner Michelle was formerly a screenwriter, and loves telling stories through found objects.

Magnets/Pushpins, upcycled from bottle caps. Etsy Shop: rbdesign. $6.00 for a set of 4.

A girl after my own heart. I love mid-century Eames-era furniture. This combines that hip imagery w/ eco-friendly practices! Shop owner Reagan is a designer at a St. Louis newspaper & part-time interior designer student.

Guitar (electro/acoustic) upcycled from a cigar box. Etsy Shop: Squier. $225.

This NY couple have a great little shop. She paints with watercolors, he upcycles old cigar boxes into cool guitars. A match made in Etsy-heaven!

Metal Bracelet, upcycled from steamer basket petals. Etsy shop: evenrose. $40.00

How inventive is this little bracelet? West Virginia shop owner Roselyn uses fabric, plastic, wood, metal to create also sorts of fun upcycled goodies. “I am having an illicit affair with the arts and it is delicious.” Well said, Roselyn!

Vintage-inspired Dresses + a bit of Anthropologie lust.

We just had two days in a row of glorious sunshine here in Ventura County, CA! I would like to blindly speed through the rest of the season with more of the same, please. To fuel my denial during breaktime, I enjoy window shopping on the interwebz for girly-girl dresses that coordinate with my mood. This is a smarter process when compared to leaving work, of course. Much quicker than actually visiting a store like Anthropologie, too – mostly because in person, the time/space continuum in my brain sort of… turns off, and I walk around in a stupor for about 3 hours. Trying on dresses & frilly skirts that are completely out of my budget, smelling that jasmine candle for the 2nd time – just to make sure it was my favorite, sitting on their buttery yellow leather sofa that costs the same as 1,000 Grande vanilla lattes at Starbucks. Sometimes I equate ridiculously expensive totally unnecessary must-haves to how much coffee one would have to give up.

P.S. I have a great pitch for their marketing team: Anthropologie SLUMBER PARTY. I always joke about how I’d totally camp out there, like Jennifer Connelly did at Target in that flick “Career Opportunities.” Psst. I’m secretly not joking at all. Okay, on with the dresses!

“Memory of Feathers” dress at Anthropologie $158.00

Everyday Bouquet dress at ModCloth $104.99

One of a kind Brocade Tea Dress by katherinelkerrison @ Etsy $107.55

Polka Dot Chiffon dress at JCPenney $49.99

Kimchi Blue Silky Sleeveless Dress at Urban Outfitters $59.99

Sweetheart Sundress by Guess? $89.99
